Men in Trees
Premieres: Tuesday, Sept. 12; moves to Fridays Sept. 15
Airs: Fridays at 9 p.m.
The Pitch: "Sex and the Tundra."
Self-help author Marin Frist (Anne Heche) thinks she's got it all -- best-selling books, a long list of speaking engagements and a perfect fiance -- until, on her way to Alaska for an appearance, she discovers her man is cheating. Stuck in a town where men greatly outnumber women, she starts to re-evaluate her life.
What They Got Right: Heche's personal life has sometimes overshadowed her ability as an actress, but she's utterly charming here. The Alaskan townsfolk are quirky, of course, but they feel like real people more than writerly creations, which is nice.
What's Oh, So Wrong: The show's DNA -- a bit of "Sex and the City" here (it was created by "SATC" writer Jenny Bicks), a healthy sprinkling of "Northern Exposure" there -- is readily apparent. A moribund Friday timeslot won't help either.
