Premieres: Tuesday, Sept. 25
Airs: Tuesdays at 10 p.m.
The Pitch: It's "Dallas" only with sugar instead of oil
A South Florida family runs their successful rum and sugar business while dealing with both professional and personal turmoil.
What They Got Right: The material featuring the older generations -- including Jimmy Smits, Nestor Carbonell, Hector Elizondo and Rita Moreno -- feels like "The Godfather" meets "Skin" meets "King Lear" with a slash of rum and a wide variety of accents. Although nearly everything feels familiar, the Florida settings give the pilot a look and rhythm of its own.
What's Oh, So Wrong: While everything in the pilot managed to seem original, it's easy to see how "Cane" could fall into a standard primetime soap format, particularly with the younger generation, whose plotline seems like a rejected arc from "South Beach." CBS had a ton of trouble with this time slot last season.
Recommended If ...: You just discovered mojitos this summer and want to expand your knowledge of Cuban culture.
