Karl Urban is one of the more recognizable faces in this season's crop of new shows, thanks to his film work in the "Star Trek" series and "Dredd" (OK, maybe not "Dredd," since he wore a mask the entire time). But "Almost Human" (premiering Monday, Nov. 4 on FOX) is also his first starring role in a TV series, and he steps to the leading-man plate with confidence. His John Kennex, a cop in a future Los Angeles, is an angry force of nature, storming through the city with a perpetual scowl. It's mostly for show, though, as Kennex is recovering from both physical and psychological wounds -- the moments when the character lets his guard down are some of Urban's best in the show. He and co-star Michael Ealy also have a crackling, adversarial chemistry that keeps "Almost Human" from ever going too dark. Karl Urban, funny man? Yeah, we're watching that.
