: Lady Sybil went into labor, delivering a healthy baby girl. But eclampsia plagued her post-pregnancy and she died that night surrounded by her husband and family.
Why this worked
: "Downton" is a strong drama but nothing was more gut-wrenching than the acting turned in for this episode. Allen Leech and Elizabeth McGovern were stand-outs, but everyone from the Dowager Countess right on down to the maids was outstanding. Plus, the death felt "right" in the sense that women dying in childbirth is a very real danger, especially back then. It was in sharp contrast to Matthew's death a few episodes later, which felt ridiculous and out of place.
