VMA Nominations Don't Lie: Shakira Leads Pack
Chili Peppers tie for lead with seven nods
She's a diminutive Colombian with more substance than your average pop starlet. They're veteran SoCal guys with a penchant for wearing socks on places other than their feet.Yet Shakira and the Red Hot Chili Peppers do have something in common: They sit atop the list of nominees for MTV's Video Music Awards -- Shakira for her song "Hips Don't Lie" and the Chili Peppers for "Dani California."
The VMAs will return to New York this year for a live broadcast (for those in the eastern part of the country) from Radio City Music Hall. The show will feature performances by Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Panic! at the Disco, T.I. and the Killers, among others. MTV also says that Jack White's band the Raconteurs will serve as the house band for the show.
"Dani California" and "Hips Don't Lie" are both up for video of the year, along with Christina Aguilera's "Ain't No Other Man," Madonna's "Hung Up" and Panic!'s "I Write Sins Not Tragedies." Madonna and Panic! at the Disco each earned five nominations, while Aguilera is up for four awards.
For the first time, MTV will open up voting in all general categories to fans. Starting Monday, all the nominated videos will be available on the network's broadband channel, Overdrive; voting is open through Aug. 20 at vma.mtv.com.
