Emmy Nominations Go Mad for 'Mad Men'
Cable shows break through, leading Emmy Award nominees
The AMC show earned 16 nominations, including one for outstanding drama series, to lead a host of cable series nominated for major awards at the 60th annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Three of the six nominees for outstanding drama series and the majority of the drama lead acting nominees come from cable.
In addition to "Mad Men," Showtime's "Dexter" and FX's "Damages" also earned nods for outstanding drama series. They're joined by ABC's "Lost" and "Boston Legal" and FOX's "House."
Four of the six nominees for lead actor in a drama -- Gabriel Byrne ("In Treatment"), Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad"), Michael C. Hall ("Dexter") and Jon Hamm ("Mad Men") -- work on cable shows. "House" star Hugh Laurie and multiple winner James Spader of "Boston Legal" are also nominated.
Similarly, three of the five nominees for lead actress in a drama come from cable: Glenn Close ("Damages"), Holly Hunter ("Saving Grace") and Kyra Sedgwick ("The Closer"). The past two winners in the category, Sally Field of "Brothers & Sisters" and Mariska Hargitay of "Law & Order: SVU," round out the category.
There weren't as many surprises on the comedy side. The past two winners for best comedy series, NBC's "30 Rock" and "The Office," are nominated again, along with perennials "Two and a Half Men," "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "Entourage."
"30 Rock" is also the leading nominee of any regular series with 17. Stars Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey were nominated in their respective lead acting categories.
Among the snubs this year were "The Wire," which was once again shut out for best drama series and all the acting categories. Its lone nomination went to David Simon and Ed Burns for writing the season finale. "Battlestar Galactica" picked up six nods, including one for writing, but didn't make the cut for any acting or series honors. ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" and "Ugly Betty," nominated last year for outstanding drama and comedy, respectively, couldn't repeat.
HBO once again is the leading network, racking up 85 total nominations, including 23 -- the most of any program -- for its miniseries "John Adams." ABC has 76 nods, including a dozen for its first-year series "Pushing Daisies." CBS (51) and NBC (50) are also among the leaders. Cable insurgents AMC, Showtime, FX and TNT racked up a combined 62 nods.
Kristin Chenoweth ("Pushing Daisies") and Neil Patrick Harris ("How I Met Your Mother") announced the nominees at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Thursday morning. When they were done, they learned that they'd each been nominated for their supporting roles on the show.
The 60th annual Primetime Emmy Awards are scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 21 on ABC.
