Lt. Andy Baldwin and Tessa Horst are still together

It looks like Operation Matrimony isn't going so well for the last star of "The Bachelor."

Lt. Andy Baldwin and his lady Tessa Horst have broken off their engagement ... but are supposedly still dating, reports People.

"We are very much in love and committed to our relationship," the couple say in a statement. "With the possibility of reassignment to a new location, we decided it was not the ideal time for Tessa to uproot herself and move out [to Hawaii] right now. Our relationship continues to deepen, and we're very hopeful about our future together."

Baldwin, 30, is a doctor in the U.S. Navy stationed in Hawaii. During the course of the show last season, he brought various women vying for his heart to the islands to test their love and take advantage of the balmy weather to show off some skin. In the May 21 finale, he chose Horst, a San Francisco-based social worker, as his potential bride.

At the time, the giddy couple had stated that Horst would be moving out to Hawaii to pursue their romance, a move that was still confirmed in late July at the Television Critics Association press tour. It's not certain why breaking their engagement is necessary even if he is reassigned to another location since this would be typical of their life ahead as a Navy man and wife, with the husband often being deployed for months at a time and the possibility of several moves throughout his career.

"I know that I have a year left [in Hawaii] and I may have the option of a three-year tour," says Baldwin. "There is also the option of a position in California. There is also a chance of me going back to finish my residency training. I am a firm believer that everything happened for a reason, and I am a firm believer that this happened in my life for a reason. Tessa came onto the show for a reason, and it is like a dream come true."

Thus far, "The Bachelor" franchise has only spawned two happy couples: Bachelor No. 6 Byron Velvick and Mary Delgado and Bachelorette No. 1 Trista Rehn and her fireman squeeze Ryan Sutter. The latter couple recently had their first child together.

The next season of "The Bachelor" is set in Texas and will premiere on ABC Sept. 24.
