Audiences Roll to Disney's 'Camp Rock'
Nearly 9 million viewers watch the Disney Channel premiere, more than 'High School Musical,' but fewer than 'HSM2'
It may not have been another "High School Musical 2," but the Disney Channel's "Camp Rock" still found a huge audience on Friday (June 20) night.According to Fast National ratings, the musical telefilm averaged 8.9 million viewers, making it cable's most watched entertainment telecast of 2007/08 and cable's most watched overall program among viewers 9-14.
"Camp Rock," which featured the already-successful Jonas Brothers and is expected to kickstart Demi Lovato's fame, actually topped the 7.8 million viewers who watched the original "High School Musical" when it set Disney Channel records in January 2006. It didn't come close, though, to equaling the 17.2 million viewers who watched "HSM2" when it premiered last August.
In addition to ruling the cable landscape, "Camp Rock" beat Friday's network numbers handily, trouncing the 5.8 million viewers averaged by CBS' programming.
The cross-platform rollout for "Camp Rock" continued on Saturday night with a Wonderful World of Disney premiere on ABC, while ABC Family will get to air the movie on Sunday night.
