A second "Flashpoint" season has been ordered for CTV.

Fans of CBS' summer drama "Flashpoint" received some partially good news on Monday (Aug. 25).

Canada's CTV announced that it has ordered a second season of the original police procedural. That decision won't, however, necessarily have any connection to whether or not "Flashpoint" returns to CBS for another run.

"Flashpoint," which focuses on a specialized emergency rescue unit out of Toronto, has aired on both CBS and CTV this summer, averaging 1.17 million Canadian viewers and roughly 7 million weekly viewers in the United States.

"'Flashpoint' has hit its mark with North American audiences and remained competitive –- even during the Olympics," says Susanne Boyce, CTV's president for creative, content and channels. "Viewers have embraced 'Flashpoint' and we are answering their call for more. The cast and creative team have delivered a series that not only entertains with high-intensity drama but with heart as well."

CTV has ordered 13 episodes of the series, which features Enrico Colantoni, Hugh Dillon and Amy Jo Johnson among its stars, to begin production in Toronto in early 2009.

"We're excited that Canadian audiences have responded with such enthusiasm to 'Flashpoint's' stories of humanity and adrenaline," series executive producers Anne Marie La Traverse and Bill Mustos say in a statement. "We're extremely proud to have this opportunity to bring more of our homegrown stories to viewers in Canada and around the world."

"Flashpoint" was originally developed for CTV, but CBS became involved with the series toward the end of the writers strike as a hedge against a possible ongoing scripted programming shortage. The network originally scheduled "Flashpoint" for Friday nights, but moved it to Thursdays after two weeks of encouraging ratings.

"You know what, it started as a strike aberration, and it's turned into something terrific," CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler told reporters at last month's Television Critics Association press tour. "We have a great relationship with CTV and the producers. We're very pleased with the numbers and are encouraged, and it's certainly sort of continuing a trend to look at the world in a very different context. There are great formats coming out of different countries as technology improves as far as what foreign content looks like. We're having a very different dialogue now. It's a global playground. We get -- you know, even writers and directors are bringing product to us from overseas. So I think it's a really very exciting time as far as exploring all these other opportunities. So it's a good thing."

CBS Paramount will remain on-board as co-producer on "Flashpoint," but CBS has not yet committed to airing the second season.
