'Angel' co-creator leaves show, cites personal reasons

After ditching most of its original pilot presentation and recasting several prominent roles, CBS' vampire drama "Moonlight" is now in need of a new showrunner.

David Greenwalt, who co-created another vampire-private eye show, "Angel," has left his position as executive producer and showrunner of the series, which is scheduled to air on Fridays in the fall. He cited personal reasons in his departure, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Greenwalt's exit, which comes less than two months after he joined the show, is the latest in a series of major shifts for the show, which stars Alex O'Loughlin ("The Shield") as a vampire who works as a private investigator in Los Angeles. Following the pilot presentation, all the primary roles save O'Loughlin's were recast, with Shannyn Sossamon replacing Amber Valetta, Sophia Myles taking over for Shannon Lucio and Jason Dohring replacing Rade Serbedzija.

Amid the recasting, Greenwalt stepped in as showrunner; Ron Koslow ("Beauty and the Beast") and Trevor Munson, who wrote the original pilot, remain with the show as executive producer and co-exec producer, respectively. Joel Silver and Gerald Bocaccio are also exec producers.

Despite all the upheaval, production on "Moonlight," which started last week, isn't expected to be affected. A new showrunner will be tapped in the coming days.
