Edward Herrmann to do guest arc

Former "Gilmore Girls" regular Edward Herrmann is joining the doctors of "Grey's Anatomy" for a guest arc this season.

Herrmann, an Emmy winner in 1999 for a guest role on "The Practice," will appear in at least three episodes of ABC's hit medical drama, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He's playing a doctor, but per standard procedure on "Grey's," details about the character are being kept quiet.

He is the third "Gilmore Girls" cast member to land TV work for next season following the show's finale in May. Melissa McCarthy co-stars in ABC's new comedy "Samantha Who?," and Scott Patterson recently joined The CW's "Aliens in America."

Herrmann played Lorelai's (Lauren Graham) patrician father, Richard, on "Gilmore Girls." He's a five-time Emmy nominee; in addition to his win for "The Practice," he was nominated twice for guest spots on "St. Elsewhere" and for the ABC movies "Eleanor and Franklin" and "Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years," in which he played President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

His film credits include "The Aviator," "Factory Girl," "The Lost Boys" and "Nixon."
