The 2008 upfronts, which usually herald the beginning of hype for the 2008-09 season, are significantly less hype-ish than usual. One network -- NBC -- presented its schedule weeks early, and the rest have announced throughout this week without the usual amount of hoopla. Even FOX is keeping it simple: While the network's announcement included two new dramas (including J.J. Abrams' "Fringe") and three new comedies, plus one unscripted series, its line-up can be understood without a degree in nuclear physics, which hasn't been the case in past years. The CW's third year on the air is showing more focus towards young women, so expect the following: soap-y dramas like "Gossip Girl" and the upcoming "90210" series, another fashion-oriented reality show following the ever-present "America's Next Top Model" and of course the continued exploitation of brooding, good-looking guys in mainstays like "One Tree Hill" and "Supernatural." Surprisingly, an 11th-hour pickup of "Reaper" was heartening news to diehard fans, who aren't necessarily the target demo. With 18 shows returning to the strongly performing network, CBS has a fair amount of scheduling stability, so the biggest shift may be in returning comedies to Wednesday night after a season of keeping laughter as a Monday-only thing.
