Mena Suvari, Matthew Modine 'Sin' for Lifetime
Pair will star in movie based on Ted Binion murder
The movie, tentatively titled "Sex & Lies in Sin City," will tell the story of casino heir Ted Binion (Modine), who was found dead in his home in 1998, and the subsequent investigation and trial for murder of his ex-stripper girlfriend (Suvari) and her lover. It's scheduled to premiere in September.
"Much like a trip to Vegas, this movie is a guilty pleasure," says Tanya Lopez, who oversees original movies for the cable network. "Ripped from the headlines, 'Sex & Lies in Sin City' captures all of the true-crime story elements and the madness that surrounded Ted Binion's life."
The story of Binion's murder has been told in numerous books and articles, and an early episode of "CSI" used elements of the case as the basis for its plot. And it's a good story: Binion's death was initially believed to be a drug overdose. His estranged sister, however, told police she suspected murder.
Cops eventually discovered that his girlfriend, former exotic dancer Sandy Murphy, had been cheating on Binion (the son of legendary casino owner Benny Binion) with a guy named Rick Tabish, and she was cut out of Binion's will the day before he died. Binion also kept a secret vault in the Nevada desert that was filled with silver bullion and rare coins; Tabish was arrested soon after Binion's death for trying to unearth the treasure.
Modine is coming off a season-long arc on Showtime's "Weeds." The "Full Metal Jacket" star's other recent credits include "The Bedford Diaries" and "Into the West." Suvari ("American Beauty") starred in the Sundance film "The Mysteries of Pittsburgh" earlier this year; her resume also includes "Domino" and "Factory Girl."
"Sex & Lies in Sin City" is based on Peter German's book "Murder in Sin City." Teena Booth (Lifetime's "A Little Thing Called Murder") wrote the script, and Peter Medak ("Homicide," "Romeo Is Bleeding") is directing.
