'30 Days,' 'Super Size Me' filmmaker signs new deal

Documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock will try his hand at scripted series as part of a new production deal.

Spurlock, who executive produces FX's "30 Days" and directed and starred in "Super Size Me," has signed a two-year deal with Fox Television Studios to produce both scripted and unscripted programs, the showbiz trade papers report. The scripted element of the deal, which kicks in whenever the writers' strike ends, will mark new territory for Spurlock.

"As a filmmaker and producer, it's so important to me to maintain my own voice and work in an environment that encourages creative freedom and the exploration of new ideas," Spurlock says. "I've had exactly that kind of experience with FX on '30 Days,' and so I'm extremely excited now to be working with Fox TV Studios, hopefully to create the kind of unabashed programming that will move audiences and make them think."

"Super Size Me" earned Spurlock an Oscar nomination and helped spawn the concept of "30 Days," in which people immerse themselves in aspects of American life that are way outside their normal experiences. His latest feature documentary, "Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden?," is scheduled to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

FX also has another season of "30 Days" on tap for later this year.
