Comedy 'Hyper-chondriac' in development

"Nip/Tuck" creator Ryan Murphy is bringing a different kind of medical show to NBC.

The network is developing a comedy pilot based on the book "Hyper-chondriac: One Man's Quest to Hurry Up and Calm Down" by Brian Frazer. Murphy will direct and executive produce the pilot, Variety reports.

Frazer's memoir recounts his efforts to rid himself of a number of stress-related ailments, which ranged from Tai Chi to Kabbalah to modern pharmaceuticals. The TV version of "Hyper-chondriac" will center on a drug-company salesman whose work-related visits to hospitals convince him that he's got all kinds of illnesses. The symptoms turn out to be real, but caused by other factors.

Jason Dean Hall is writing the script and serve as a co-executive producer with Murphy. Production is tentatively set for early 2009.

The project is the second Murphy has set up at a broadcast network in recent weeks. He's also working on "Glee," an hour-long dramedy about a high-school choir, for FOX; it could be on the air by the spring. "Nip/Tuck" is slated to continue on FX for two more seasons.
