No Extra Seasons for 'Extras'
Gervais sticks to guns, may wrap show with special
As they did with their version of "The Office," Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant have decided not to make a third season of their comedy "Extras."The BBC/HBO series, which chronicled the ups and mostly downs of struggling actor-writer Andy Millman (Gervais), aired its second season in the United States earlier this year. It concluded with a (faint) ray of hope, though, as Andy was on his way to a meeting with Robert DeNiro.
According to numerous news reports, Gervais and Merchant -- who also plays Andy's incompetent agent, Darren -- had considered filming a third season. Ultimately, though, the pair decided to hold to their original plan of two seasons and out.
There is, however, the possibility of one final episode to wrap up the show, as was the case with "The Office." Gervais' spokeswoman tells the BBC that the idea is in its "very, very early" stages, with no premiere date in mind.
"Extras" has earned a number of awards and nominations on both sides of the Atlantic, including four Emmy nominations last year -- for writing and guest actors Kate Winslet, Ben Stiller and Patrick Stewart. Merchant won the award for comedy performance at the Royal Television Society awards in London last week.
