WHAT TO WATCH

For four other TV networks and the statistically questionable audience measurement gurus at Nielsen, the TV season starts in September, but for FOX, the remaining months of 2008 are merely prelude to the viewership orgy that greets "American Idol" in January.

While FOX has occasionally been known to basically turn off the lights for September and October, this season may be different.

For one thing, FOX has an established stable of hits returning. And no, we aren't looking at you, "'Til Death." Viewers can look forward to the returns of shows like "House" and "Bones" and "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles."

While several of FOX's biggest new shows, including Joss Whedon's "Dollhouse," won't premiere until January (along with "Idol" and the long-awaited new day of "24"), the network has a new comedy ("Do Not Disturb"), a new reality show ("Hole in the Wall") and its most anticipated new drama (the heavily promoted J.J. Abrams drama "Fringe") launching before postseason baseball kicks in.

Maybe this will be the year FOX doesn't even need that "American Idol" infusion in January? [Thank you. I'll be here all week. Enjoy the veal.]
