NBC's New Shows for the 2007-08 Season

Bionic Woman

Premieres: Wednesday, Sept. 26
Airs: Wednesdays at 9 p.m.

The Pitch: A remake of the 1970s series, with a somewhat grittier tone and better action scenes.

After a gruesome car accident, Jaime Sommers (Michelle Ryan) awakes to find that her legs, arm, eye and ear have been replaced by bionic implants that give her extraordinary strength and sensory abilities. The new parts, however come courtesy of a top-secret group that's intent on using Jaime for possibly unsavory ends. And there's another bionic woman ("Battlestar Galactica's" Katee Sackhoff) who doesn't like the idea of having any competition.

What They Got Right: It would be hard to call this show realistic, but the advances in medicine since the original show aired 30 years ago at least make it a little more plausible. Ryan, one of many British actors on series this fall, proves utterly capable of being a lead, and she holds her own against Sackhoff -- who's as good as she is on "BSG." The action sequences are well-done too.

What's Oh, So Wrong: The tone (at least in the early version of the pilot sent to critics) is rather grim. It would serve the show well to lighten up a little going forward. A clearer idea of the group behind the bionics would be nice too.

Recommended If ...: You've worn out your "Buffy" and "Alias" DVDs from repeated viewings.
