Rob Thomas Scores Third Pilot
'Veronica Mars' creator also working on 'Cupid,' '90210'
"Veronica Mars" creator Rob Thomas is ready to claim the title of Busiest Writer in Television.Thomas has landed his third pilot order in the past couple of weeks, this time for a dramedy at ABC about a family of thieves. The network has ordered a comedy pilot called "Five Year Plan" from writers Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, the showbiz trade papers say.
Like the other two projects Thomas is working on -- an update of " Beverly Hills, 90210" for The CW and a reworking of his 1998 series "Cupid" for ABC -- the latest pilot is based on a pre-existing TV property, in this case a New Zealand series called "Outrageous Fortune." It centers on the matriarch of a family of criminals, who decides to get out of the game after her husband goes to prison.
Thomas is writing the script for the untitled project and will executive produce with John Barnett, whose company also produces the New Zealand series. Since the project came after "Cupid" and "90210," it will assume a lower priority on Thomas' to-do list for now.
"Five Year Plan," meanwhile, is an ensemble comedy about a group of young friends, all of whom have -- you guessed it -- five-year plans for improving their lives and reaching their goals.
Port and Wiseman penned the NBC pilot "The IT Crowd" last year and have also written for "Just Shoot Me" and "Dilbert." They've also served as consulting producers on "The Office."
