Winner will front new band

LOS ANGELES -- Last summer, "Rock Star" helped resurrect the career of INXS. Now, producer Mark Burnett wants to create a chart-topping band from scratch.

For the second season of CBS' "Rock Star," Burnett has gathered three big names in the hard-rock world: drummer Tommy Lee, guitarist Gilby Clarke and bassist Jason Newsted. They'll be forming a band called Supernova, and they need a singer.

"I've toured with both Gilby and Jason. They're incredible musicians and I've always wanted to play with them," says Lee, Motley Crue's wild-man drummer. "Starting a new band with old friends on worldwide television is going to be a blast, and we're going to pull out all the stops to find the most charismatic and musically talented lead singer to front Supernova. I love breaking the rules."

Sixteen people will compete for the job of fronting Supernova, with fans helping the band choose the winner. Once that's taken care of, the group will record an album with producer Butch Walker (The Donnas, Avril Lavigne) for release in the fall, with a tour to follow next year.

"The winner of CBS's 'Rock Star' will not only play in huge stadiums before sold-out crowds, they will do it alongside legendary musicians from three of America's biggest, all-time rock bands," Burnett says.

Clarke played with Guns 'n' Roses on its albums "The Spaghetti Incident" and "Live Era '88-'91" and was with the band on its epic "Use Your Illusion" tour; he's also played with the likes of MC5, Jeff Beck and Lenny Kravitz. Newsted was with Metallica for more than a decade and has also worked with Ozzy Osbourne and Voivod, and Lee, in addition to Motley Crue, has released several albums with Methods of Mayhem and as a solo artist.

Dave Navarro and Brooke Burke will return as hosts of "Rock Star." The show will also feature a guest judge each week; Navarro says the likes of Slash, Macy Gray and Rob Zombie have agreed to appear on the show.
