'Saturday Night' Goes Extra-Live This Fall
Seven Saturday shows, specials lead into election

The folks at "Saturday Night Live" will be busier than usual in the run-up to the presidential election.
In addition to a trio of previously announced prime-time specials geared to the election, the late-night institution will go live more than usual in the early part of the 2008-09 season. "SNL" will kick off its 34th season Saturday, Sept. 13 and offer up new episodes for four consecutive weeks, a rarity for the show. A total of seven new episodes will air prior to the election, with the only Saturday off coming on Oct. 11.
Additionally, the show will expand its total number of episodes from the usual 20 to 22.
"'Saturday Night Live' always reflects what people are talking about. This is especially true during an election year," says Rick Ludwin, who oversees late night for NBC. "This fall, we're giving the audience what they clearly want."
Along with the flagship Saturday shows, the "SNL" crew will air three live, prime-time "Weekend Update Thursday" specials starting Oct. 9. The specials will be anchored by "Update" segments with Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler -- who'll remain with the show until her baby is born -- and could include a sketch or two as well.
Additionally, the traditional "SNL Presidential Bash," featuring a mix of new and previously aired material, will air the night before the election, Monday, Nov. 2.
