Regis' schedule was just too busy. Jerry's? Not so busy.

Jerry Springer, rather than Regis Philbin, will be hosting when "America's Got Talent" returns to NBC this summer.

NBC announced the hosting swap on Monday (March 5). According to media reports, Philbin's travel schedule made a return engagement too complicated, making Springer the apparently obvious second choice.

"I've been around some of America's most talented individuals on my talk show for the last 16 years, so I'll feel right at home hosting 'America's Got Talent,'" Springer says in a statement. "I love the show and look forward to discovering the best performers from across the country."

"America's Got Talent" was one of last summer's most successful original series, averaging 11 million viewers per episode and a solid 3.5 rating among adults 18-49.

The show is executive produced by "American Idol" just Simon Cowell, who welcomed Springer into the fold saying "I am absolutely thrilled that Jerry has agreed to host the next season of our show for a number of reasons, he is the perfect person for this show. I wish him (and he is going to need it!) the best of luck."

Springer's eponymous talk show is in its 16th season and comes from corporate sibling NBC Universal Domestic Television. The former Cincinnati mayor and "Ringmaster" star had a surprisingly long run on ABC's most recent season of "Dancing with the Stars."
