Kelly Macdonald also in talks for Scorsese-directed pilot

Steve Buscemi, who did a season-long turn on "The Sopranos" a few years back, may be returning to the HBO fold.

The "Fargo" and "Reservoir Dogs" star is in talks with the network about starring in its drama pilot "Boardwalk Empire." Emmy winner Kelly Macdonald ("No Country for Old Men") is also in discussions to join the show, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Boardwalk Empire," created by former "Sopranos" writer Terence Winter and based on a book by Nelson Johnson, tells the story of the rise of Atlantic City, N.J., as an entertainment mecca in the 1920s. Martin Scorsese will direct the pilot.

Buscemi will play Nucky Johnson, a liquor distributor whose business is threatened by Prohibition. Macdonald will play Margaret, an Irish immigrant stuck in a bad marriage.

Both actors are familiar faces at HBO. In addition to his Emmy-nominated turn on "The Sopranos" in 2004, Buscemi also directed episodes of the series and of "Oz." He earned another Emmy nod last year for a guest role on NBC's "30 Rock."

Macdonald won her Emmy in 2006 for her work in the network's movie "The Girl in the Cafe." Her other credits include "Gosford Park," "Choke" and "State of Play."
