HBO has endowed Thomas Jane with the lead role in its comedy pilot "Hung."

The "Punisher" star will play a high-school basketball coach who decides his improve his lot in life by using his best asset -- which you can probably figure out from the title of the show. It will be the first regular series role for Jane.

"Hung" comes from "The Riches" creator Dmitry Lipkin and Colette Burson, who wrote for the FX series. Alexander Payne ("Election," "Little Children") will direct the pilot, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

All three will serve as executive producers, along with Michael Rosenberg, Noreen Halpern and John Morayniss.

The project is the first pilot greenlit by new HBO Entertainment President Sue Naegle, who took over the job in April.

In addition to "The Punisher," Jane's movie credits include "Boogie Nights," "The Sweetest Thing," "The Thin Red Line" and "The Mist." On TV, he's guested on "Medium" -- which stars his wife, Patricia Arquette -- and starred in HBO's 2001 movie "61*."
