'Vegas' Creator Cops Two Drama Deals
More popcorn TV from Thompson
Gary Scott Thompson has set up drama pilots at CBS and NBC, both character-driven cop shows. The "Las Vegas" creator and "Fast and the Furious" scribe is developing the ensemble police drama "Protect and Serve" for CBS. The show will focus on Los Angeles street cops, though Thompson emphasizes that it will follow the offices home as well.
"It has a procedural edge to it," Thompson tells The Hollywood Reporter. "It's not serialized and yet it's character-driven."
CBS has given a script commitment to the show and Thompson will write the pilot with "Snow Dogs" scribes Mark Gibson and Philip Halprin for NBC Universal TV.
NBCU-TV is also home to the NBC pilot, which has also snagged a script commitment, despite the apparent absence of a title. It involves a former New York City cop who loses his family on 9/11 and follows his ex-wife to Hawaii. The trade paper suggests that the show won't be a downer, though, falling somewhere in the vein of "Magnum P.I."
Thompson will write the NBC pilot without any help.
