Valerie Bertinelli will try her hand at sitcoms for the first time in more than a decade, thanks to TBS.

The former "One Day at a Time" star and current Jenny Craig pitchwoman has signed on to star in a pilot from "Bill Engvall Show" writer-producer Dave Caplan, playing a single mom trying to turn around a struggling business.

Should the pilot get picked up, it would be Bertinelli's first sitcom role since the short-lived "Cafe Americain" in the 1993-94 season, and her first regular series role since "Touched by an Angel" went off the air in 2003.

"Valerie Bertinelli became a popular fixture on television playing one of two children being raised by a single working mother [on 'One Day at a Time'], Turner programming czar Michael Wright says. "Now she's exploring that world from the opposite angle, playing a single working mother raising two children. Between Valerie's comic skills and Dave Caplan's highly relatable humor, we're very excited to watch this pilot take shape."

In addition to TBS' "Bill Engvall Show," Caplan has worked as a writer and producer on "George Lopez" and "The Drew Carey Show" and "The Norm Show."

Bertinelli most recently starred in Lifetime's "True Confessions of a Hollywood Starlet," which premiered earlier this month. Other recent credits include the TV movies "Claire" and "Finding John Christmas."
