'Project Runway' Prohibited From Moving to Lifetime
The reality competition show is currently in its fifth season
Despite an announcement that Bravo's reality competition juggernaut " Project Runway" would jump to Lifetime in the new year, some legal wrangling has thrown a wrench in the cable network machinery.
" NBC Universal is pleased that the court granted our motion for a preliminary injunction against The Weinstein Company," reads a statement released by NBC Universal on Friday (Sept. 26). "The overwhelming evidence demonstrated that The Weinstein Company violated NBC Universal's right of first refusal to future cycles of 'Project Runway.' After hearing all of the evidence, the court issued an order prohibiting The Weinstein Company from taking the show or any spin-off to Lifetime."
The legal tussle began in April when The Weinstein Co., which produces "Project Runway," and Lifetime announced the move for the show's upcoming sixth season. NBCU sued, citing breach of contract since they had the right of first refusal to pick up the show for additional seasons.
Lifetime soldiered on, however, and even recently announced that it would push the premiere of the sixth season from November to sometime next year. The network claimed the delay was done in order for the show to get the proper launch. Another report said that the show had started production and that Lindsay Lohan was the guest judge for the first episode.
So, although the court injunction means that "Project Runway" won't be moving to Lifetime anytime soon, it's not clear what it means in regards to its future with Bravo.
The fifth season of "Project Runway" is currently airing on Wednesday nights on Bravo.
