Emmys Lead NBC to Sunday Win
Awards take the night, but 'Pirates' strong for ABC
The Emmy Awards led NBC to a solid ratings win Sunday night, though ABC's showing of "Pirates of the Caribbean" pillaged some of the ceremony's younger audience.
NBC averaged a 9.2 rating/15 share for the night. CBS was second in households at 5.9/10, though ABC, 5.6/9, had more total viewers. FOX took fourth with a 2.7/4, and The WB hardly registered, coming in at 0.8/1.
The Emmys also put NBC on top in adults 18-49 with a 4.3 rating. ABC was a solid second at 3.5. CBS, 2.5, came in third, followed by FOX, 1.7, and The WB, 0.4.
CBS got a strong performance from "60 Minutes" (8.0/14) to win the 7 p.m. hour. NBC's Emmy red-carpet special posted a 5.1/9. "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" delivered a 4.8/9 for ABC (and beat NBC in total viewers for the hour). FOX went with the movie "Star Wars: Episode II," and The WB aired an episode of "Just Legal."
NBC vaulted into the lead at 8 p.m. as the first hour of the Emmys, hosted by Conan O'Brien, scored a 10.3/17. "Pirates" earned a 6.1/10 for ABC to move into second. "Big Brother: All-Stars" was third for CBS with a 5.2/9. FOX's movie averaged 2.7/4, while The WB trailed with a "Charmed" rerun.
The Emmys improved to 11.0/17 at 9 p.m. ABC's movie also improved, closing with a 7.0/11. A "Cold Case" rerun on CBS posted a 5.1/8, while FOX's movie concluded with a 3.2/5. The WB closed its night with a second episode of "Charmed."
At 10 p.m., the Emmys dipped a little to 10.4/17 but still won the hour easily. "Without a Trace" scored a 5.5/9 for CBS, and a "Grey's Anatomy" rerun on ABC came in at 4.4/7.
On Friday, ABC's lineup of "America's Funniest Home Videos," "Kyle XY" and "20/20" won the night with a 4.0/7, with CBS (3.8/7) and NBC (3.7/7) close behind. FOX averaged 3.2/6 to take fourth. UPN scored a 2.2/4 and The WB a 1.3/2.
Saturday brought a win to NBC, which averaged 3.8/7 with "Dateline" and two repeats of "Law & Order: CI." ABC and CBS tied for second at 3.6/7, while FOX trailed with a 3.3/6.
