NFL Kicks Off Strong Thursday
NBC dominates ratings with season opener
The opening game of the NFL season swept NBC to a big ratings victory Thursday night.
NBC averaged a 10.2 rating/17 share in primetime, with those numbers subject to change some because of the live broadcast. That was way ahead of second-place CBS, 6.2/10, and No. 3 FOX, 5.2/9. ABC was well back at 2.8/5, and The CW trailed with a 1.2/2.
In the adults 18-49 demographic, NBC scored a 6.4 rating, more than doubling its closest competitor. CBS and FOX tied for second at 2.7. ABC, 1.3, came in fourth, while The CW drew a 0.7.
NBC's pre-game show, 7.1/13, and the start of the game between the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints, 10.3/17, easily won the 8 p.m. hour. "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" earned a 5.3/9 for FOX, edging CBS' "Big Brother," 5.2/9. "Ugly Betty" was fourth for ABC at 3.1/5. The CW went with a "Smallville" rerun.
The Colts-Saints game improved to 11.5/18 at 9 p.m. CBS moved up to second with "CSI," 6.4/10. "Don't Forget the Lyrics" earned a 5.1/8 for FOX. A "Grey's Anatomy" rerun kept ABC in fourth, ahead of "Supernatural," 1.1/2, on The CW.
At 10 p.m., the NFL game dipped some to 10.3/18 as the Colts pulled away en route to a 41-10 win. A "Without a Trace" rerun on CBS posted a solid 6.9/12, and ABC's "Men in Trees" came in at 2.4/4.
