Football Rules Sunday for NBC
NFL also gives CBS a boost; WB signs off quietly
Football boosted the fortunes of two networks Sunday night, with NBC coming out on top. The WB, meanwhile, didn't draw much of an audience to its final night of existence.
For the night, NBC averaged a 9.4 rating/15 share to beat out CBS' 7.5/12 (both networks had live football for at least part of the night, so their numbers may change some in final nationals). ABC finished third with a 5.7/9, followed by FOX at 4.3/7. The WB trailed with a 1.0/2.
NBC also led among adults 18-49 with a 5.7 rating. CBS took second with a 3.7, topping FOX, 3.3, and ABC, 3.1. The WB fell below the 1.0 mark.
Late-ending NFL games and "60 Minutes" averaged 9.8/17 for CBS at 7 p.m. "Football Night in America" delivered a 5.2/9 to put NBC in second. A repeat of "America's Funniest Home Videos" on ABC was third. Reruns of "The Simpsons" 3.0/5, and "'Til Death," 3.3/6, put FOX in fourth. The WB aired the debut episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
NBC moved into the lead at 8 p.m. as "Sunday Night Football" (including few minutes of pre-game talk) posted a 10.0/16. CBS dropped to second with the second half of "60 Minutes," 8.7/14, and the premiere of "The Amazing Race," 6.4/10. The start of a two-hour "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" posted a 5.9/9 for ABC. FOX stayed in fourth with "The Simpsons," 5.2/8, and "American Dad," 4.7/7. "Buffy" continued on The WB.
At 9 p.m., NBC's NFL game between Washington and Dallas improved to 11.7/18. "EM: Home Edition" moved ABC into second with a 7.2/11. "The Amazing Race," 6.3/9, was third for CBS, beating out "Family Guy," 5.5/9, and "The War at Home," 4.1/6. The WB ended its 11-year run by showing the pilot of "Dawson's Creek."
"Sunday Night Football" continued to lead at 10 p.m. with a 10.6/17. A "Without a Trace" repeat on CBS scored a 6.5/11, and ABC's "Desperate Housewives" rerun drew a 5.2/8.
On Saturday, FOX's lineup of "Cops" and "America's Most Wanted" won the night with a 4.0/8. CBS and NBC tied for second at 3.6/7 (CBS had a total-viewer edge), and ABC trailed with a 3.1/6.
