ABC yuletide special to premiere in '07

ABC, which already airs "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town," is hoping to add a new special to its pantheon of holiday staples.

The network has commissioned "Shrek the Halls," a half-hour special featuring characters from the two hugely popular "Shrek" films. It's scheduled to premiere in December 2007.

"Family classics are a cornerstone of our brand," says Stephen McPherson, president of ABC Entertainment. "'Shrek the Halls' will provide warm memories year after year and be a great addition to our library of holiday favorites."

The special comes from DreamWorks Animation, which produced both "Shrek" films, and will feature the principal voice talent from both movies: Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), Cameron Diaz (Fiona) and Antonio Banderas (Puss in Boots). Plot details are a little fuzzy, but DreamWorks Animation CEO says the special will explore "how Christmas would play out in [Shrek's] world."

Gary Trousdale ("Beauty and the Beast") will direct "Shrek the Halls," with Teresa Chang ("Madagascar") and Gina Shay ("The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie") producing.

Probably not coincidentally, ABC will also be home to the broadcast premiere of "Shrek 2" on Friday, Nov. 24.
