Toni Collette On 'Tara' Firma for Showtime
Steven Spielberg is producing the Diablo Cody-scripted pilot
The DreamWorks TV production, from executive producer Steven Spielberg, will be the first regular American series gig for Collette.
Written by Diablo Cody ("Juno"), "The United States of Tara" has been described as "'Weeds' meets 'Sybil'" and focuses on Tara (Collette), a suburban wife and mother with a twist -- she's also got a variety of bizarre alternate personalities, including an aggressive male biker and a promiscuous teenager girl.
"When you're casting a show that requires an actress to not only play one complex character, but in this case several, the road begins and ends with Toni Collette," Showtime Networks Entertainment President Robert Greenblatt says. "All of us at Showtime and DreamWorks are thrilled to have one of the best young actresses of her generation come aboard this project."
The pilot will shoot in early 2008.
In addition to her Oscar nod for "The Sixth Sense," Collette picked up Golden Globe nominations for "Muriel's Wedding" and "Little Miss Sunshine," as well as the HBO telefilm "Tsunami: The Aftermath," for which she received her first Emmy nomination.
