'Pi,' 'Fountain' director develops series project

Director Darren Aronofsky will bring his vision to bear on television, developing a project with AMC.

The cable network, which earned acclaim with its series "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad" in the past year, has turned to Aronofsky ("Pi," "Requiem for a Dream") for "Riverview Towers," a thriller about a family who moves into an apartment building that's a hub of paranormal activity. The show was in development at HBO a couple of years ago, according to The Hollywood Reporter, but it never advanced there.

John J. McLaughlin, who worked on the earlier version, is writing a new script for AMC. He also penned the screenplay for Aronofsky's upcoming film "Black Swan."

"Riverview Towers" is one of several series projects AMC has in development. It's also working on shows from "24" co-creator Robert Cochran, former "Twin Peaks" writer Harley Peyton and director Allison Anders ("Mi Vida Loca," "Sex and the City").

Aronofsky will executive produce the project, but he's not planning to direct it; Patty Jenkins ("Monster") is in talks to direct should AMC order a pilot. Eric Watson and Jed Weintrob will also serve as executive producers.
