Darren Star on 'Call' at HBO
'SATC' creator adapting 'Call Girl' memoir
It's not, however, a redo of that other series. Star is writing and will executive produce an adaptation of "Diary of a Manhattan Call Girl," based on a memoir by call girl-turned-author Tracy Quan. The series will examine the lives of several women who work as high-end escorts.
"These women are not at all ashamed or stigmatized by what they do," Star tells The Hollywood Reporter. "In fact, there is something aspirational about it. No one has quite looked at the world of high-end call girls, and this show intends to do that."
The pilot will be Star's first turn as a solo series creator in several years. He's served as an exec producer on a number of shows since then, including "Miss Match," "Kitchen Confidential" and ABC's upcoming "Cashmere Mafia." (He's also a producer of the "Sex and the City" movie due in theaters next year.)
Star initially developed "Diary of a Manhattan Call Girl" as a feature film. That didn't pan out, so he reworked the show as a possible series and took it to HBO. He'll executive produce the project with Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas ("Maid in Manhattan," "Perfect Stranger").
