As expected, David Gregory takes over NBC's Sunday show

NBC confirmed weeks of speculation on Sunday in announcing that David Gregory will become the new moderator of "Meet the Press."

The announcement of Gregory as the new moderator came during Sunday's (Dec. 7) edition of the show. Gregory, who has been NBC's lead White House correspondent for several years, takes over from Tom Brokaw, who had been serving as interim host following the death of Tim Russert earlier this year.

"I'm honored and deeply humbled as I take on this role," Gregory said. "I'm filled with a great sense of purpose as I join a superb team to cover Washington and the world from a treasured platform in our country. Above all, I want to make Tim proud."

"Meet the Press" is the longest-running program in the history of network television, having premiered in November 1947. Gregory will be the 10th permanent host of the show.

"For 61 years, this program has played a vital role in our nation's political discourse and millions of Americans' Sunday mornings," NBC News president Steve Capus says. "We lost a legend this summer, and today we hand the program over to someone who has a true appreciation and respect for the 'Meet the Press' legacy, and a keen sense of what it needs to be in the future."

Betsy Fischer will remain as executive producer of "Meet the Press," a job she's had since 2002.
