Dick Wolf to produce pilot based on comic book

"Law & Order" creator Dick Wolf is taking a major departure from his crime-procedural roots, backing the development of a CGI-heavy series based on the Johnny Dynamite comic-book character.

Wolf is working with writer J.H. Wyman ("Keen Eddie," "The Mexican") and "Disturbia" director D.J. Caruso on the project. Though it's not attached to a network yet, it will be produced by Universal Media Studios, Wolf's long-time studio home, Variety reports.

Johnny Dynamite first appeared in the early 1950s as a hard-boiled private eye. "Road to Perdition" author Max Allan Collins revived the character in recent years. The series would follow Collins' take on the character, with Johnny following his missing girlfriend's trail to Las Vegas, where he discovers the devil has set up shop.

Rather than try to re-create the comic's look using physical locations, the show would be filmed entirely against green screens, a la "300" and "Sin City." It would be the first all-green-screen show on television.

Wolf, Wyman and Caruso will serve as executive producers of the pilot along with Nena Rodrigue and Peter Jankowski. Collins will be a co-executive producer.
