Former 'ER' star joins Krause in cast

Emmy winner and "Snakes on a Plane" star Julianna Margulies will take on some otherworldly forces in her next project.

Margulies has signed on to star in the Sci Fi Channel's upcoming miniseries "The Lost Room," which is scheduled to premiere in December. She joins Peter Krause ("Six Feet Under"), Roger Bart ("Desperate Housewives") and Elle Fanning ("Because of Winn-Dixie") in the cast.

Her character, Jennifer, will set the story in motion when she tells a detective (Krause) that her brother was killed over the key to a hotel room. The key, she says, unlocks a room full of seemingly ordinary objects that hold unbelievable powers.

Krause's character gets sucked into the mystery when his daughter (Fanning) disappears into the room. He and Jennifer have to work together to figure out how to get the child back and evade the sinister types trying to gain possession of the key, which is the most powerful object of all.

Margulies will next be seen in the hotly anticipated "Snakes on a Plane," which opens Aug. 18. She also had a recurring part on "The Sopranos" earlier this year, playing a real-estate agent who becomes involved with Christopher (Michael Imperioli).

She won an Emmy in 1995 for playing nurse Carol Hathaway on "ER" and was nominated five other teams before leaving the NBC series in 2000. She also won two individual Screen Actors Guild awards and three as a member of the show's ensemble.
