Federline Fights Back for Custody, Money

Kevin Federline, who found out about Britney Spears' plans to divorce him through news reports, isn't going to go away quietly.

The "Lose Control" singer is fighting his estranged wife for full custody of their children, reports TMZ.com.

Although Federline has shown he could indeed father children, he hasn't necessarily demonstrated any overwhelming fathering instincts. He left his ex-girlfriend Shar Jackson pregnant with their second child together when he began to date and then later married Spears. During their marriage, he was often out partying or promoting his fledgling music career, leaving the kids -- Sean Preston, 1, and Jayden James, 2 months -- with either Spears or the nanny.

Sources read his latest move as a attempt to get more money out of Spears. Before this bombshell dropped, he was allegedly communicating with attorney Mark Kaplan to try to cash in on a divorce from Spears. With the singer's ironclad prenup, however, he's only entitled to less than 20 percent of the approximately $10 million value of the couple's Malibu estate and spousal support amounting to less than $250,000 for one year.

According to the celebrity gossip site, the ploy may push Spears to cough up more money to avoid a bitter custody battle. It's less likely that he'll actually win custody, but in that case, he could receive a significant amount of child support.

Since their marriage in October 2004, Federline's fame has increased to some degree, but not as high as he'd hoped. After a guest appearance on "CSI," he made an abysmal debut on the Billboard 200 at No. 151 with "Playing With Fire," selling only about 6,000 copies since it dropped on Halloween. With concert venues underselling his performances and even giving away tickets to the public, these numbers come as no suprise.

In the meantime, Spears has announced that she wants to return to her career as a pop singer and has been seen jaunting around New York in a newly toned post-pregnacy body and fashionable blonde bob.
