High Five: Showtime Renews 'The L Word'
New episodes will premiere next January
The premium cable network announced on Thursday (March 8) that production will begin this summer on a 12-episode fifth season, which will premiere in early 2008.
"'The L Word' is a signature franchise for us and one of our most popular series," says Showtime Entertainment President Robert Greenblatt. "This season's guest star Cybill Shepherd and new series regular Marlee Matlin are indicative of the show's great quality. With our launch of OurChart.com (a social networking site that grew directly out of 'The L Word'), and the show's growing popularity in Second Life, this series goes well beyond the boundaries of a mere television show. Since its launch in 2004, the zeitgeist has never been the same."
Created by Ilene Chaiken, "The L Word" first premiered in January 2004 and focuses on the lives of a group of friends and lovers living in Los Angeles. The show's fourth season premiered this January and will reach its finale on Sunday, March 25. The 2006 GLAAD Media Award winner for outstanding drama series, "The L Word" also earned an Emmy nomination in 2005 for Ossie Davis' guest starring turn.
