'Meadowlands' Enters Showtime Arena

Showtime and the United Kingdom's Channel 4 are co-producing a new eight-episode drama titled "Meadowlands."

"Basic Instinct 2" (and "State of Play," "Viva Blackpool") star David Morrissey and Lucy Cohu ("The Queen's Sister") will topline the series, which begins production this month in England and will likely premiere on Showtime next summer.

The series has nothing at all to do with the New Jersey-based sports and entertainment complex, which raises the question of why Showtime thinks "Meadowlands" is a better title than the series' British name of "Cape Wrath."

The name "Meadowlands" actually refers to the bucolic suburban neighborhood where Danny (Morrissey) and Evelyn (Cohu) Brogan relocate along with their two teenage children after entering the witness protection program. Naturally, they discover that their past isn't so easy to escape and that Meadowlands isn't the safe haven they hoped for.

"I am pleased to be partnering with Channel 4 on this truly original series," says Showtime Entertainment President Robert Greenblatt. "This show is sexy, mysterious, provocative, and filled with original characters, all of which dovetail with our premium mandate."

Ecosse Films is producing the series, which was created by Robert Murphy with Matthew Aldridge, Ecosse's head of TV development. Duane Clark, whose TV credits include multiple episodes for each part of the "CSI" franchise, will direct.
