Darren Star will produce 'We Need Girlfriends'

CBS and Darren Star will look to bring the Web series "We Need Girlfriends" to the slightly bigger small screen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, CBS has given a script commitment to "Girlfriends," which will be written by Steven Tsapelas, Angel Acevedo and Brian Amyot, creators of the original YouTube series.

Star, creator of HBO's "Sex and the City," will executive produce "Girlfriends," set up at Sony Pictures TV.

Over the course of 11 episodes, "Girlfriends" focused on a trio of recent college graduates who have to enter the New York City dating scenes after they're simultaneously dumped. Patrick Cohen, Seth Kirschner and Evan Bass starred in the Web series, one of YouTube's most successful. Naturally, they'll almost certainly be replaced if the pilot goes to series.

Star's slate for the upcoming development season includes production duties on the pilots "Literary Superstars" at ABC and "Raffik" at FOX. He's also writing and executive producing "Diary of a Manhattan Call Girl" for HBO.
