TV Fashion: Lana Lang of 'Smallville'
That is, unless you're the very stylish Lana Lang, played by Kristin Kreuk on The CW's "Smallville" (airing Thursdays), you just need a pair of sexy jeans and a figure-flattering top designed to make the Man of Steel melt in your arms.Of course, this season Lana has turned to the dark side in more ways than one. Her relationship with Lex is heating up, and her fashion sense is showing viewers that the way into a megalomaniac's dark heart is through precipitous use of black. While the little black dress is certainly a staple of any smart woman's wardrobe, people tend to forget about black in other forms. Jerseys, cardigans, tanks, camisoles and tunics in black tend to add an air of elegance to an otherwise casual ensemble.
And when you start with the sultry looks of Lana, even black T-shirts look cool. For example, a black long-sleeve V-neck T-shirt like the one worn in the first episode of last season, made by Splendid and available at shopbop.com. Clingy, tight and semisheer, it features 3/4-inch banding at the neck and is made of 50 percent cotton and 50 percent modal. Modal is a bio-based fiber made by spinning reconstituted cellulose from beech trees and is 50 percent more water absorbent than cotton. It also does not pill and is resistant to shrinkage and fading.
Another Lana favorite is a BCBG ruffle charmeuse polo in black. Ruffled smocking details a silk charmeuse polo shirt with an open neckline and button-cuffed sleeves. The shirt also features a hidden side zipper, elastic empire waist and a paneled hem. Available at Nordstrom, the $138 shirt works beautifully over skinny jeans.Speaking of which, Lana tends to wear skinny jeans like Lex wears bald. The siren slides into phenomenal 16-inch straight leg dark vintage jeans by J Brand. The 16-inch refers to the opening at the straight leg. These jeans are beyond hot and feature five-pocket styling, single-button closure and contrasting bronze stitching throughout. Available for $158 at www.couturecandy.com, they can then be paired with black patent leather Liliana's from Nine West. These 4-inch heeled peep-toe dazzlers will make a man weaker than kryptonite in his cornflakes.
For a more ethereal look, Ms. Lang has been spotted in the long poet superfine cardigan by Free People (available through Urban Outfitters). Featuring a deep-V front and button placket, the sweater's most obvious styling cue is its poet sleeves. Long ribbed cuffs begin at the elbows, creating the infamous puffy sleeve from the elbow to the shoulders. It's the perfect cover-up if you can't decide whether your boyfriend should save the world or destroy it.
