TV Fashion: Lily Aldrin from 'How I Met Your Mother' (CBS)

A redhead with ruffles

With a title like "How I Met Your Mother," you'd expect this sitcom to have all the innovation and creativeness of a Hush Puppies shoebox - rigid, formulaic and square. OK, technically, shoeboxes have a rectangular shape, but you know what we mean. However, the show is a sleeper thanks in large part to Lily Aldrin, played by "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" alum Alyson Hannigan. While not exactly stylish, Lily seems to be trying, and that is enough to give her the nod this week.

Her wardrobe consists mainly of simple, cute stuff. Nothing fancy, nothing grubby - a standard, straight-ahead closet for a 20-something, off hours. A lot of form-fitting tank tops, lovely printed tunics and crisp camisoles, many by Nanette Lepore. And at any time these tops might be layered under a soft cardigan or something like a tie-front sweater by Urban Outfitters. The look really emphasizes the "girl next door" vibe that Hannigan perfected in both "Buffy" and the "American Pie" movies.

And though television characters are rarely seen wearing the same item of clothing from episode to episode, Lily does have some style staples. For example, she's big into ruffle trim. Take, for example, the floating blossoms silk dress from Marc by Marc Jacobs that she wore in the episode "Game Night." Again, a green ruffled v-neck with cap sleeves, this flouncy vintage-inspired pullover dress has a drawstring at the Empire waist and virtually screams Lily.

In fact, she often utilizes soft, semifitted dresses that let you know she has a figure but isn't prepared to throw it in your face.

Of course, all of this is not to say that Lily is without her problems. There are inherent dangers in being a redhead; your color options are limited. Later in the season Lily was delving into more vibrant prints and colors with mixed success. On the plus side, there were some perfect leopard and brick prints from Diane von Furstenberg. On the "what were they thinking" side, consider the ivory leafed print ruched dress in red, white, black and gray by Betsey Johnson from the episode "Life Among the Gorillas." While the dress itself was charming, on Lily it was about as appealing as sucking on a shard of glass with a salt lick chaser.

And while there are exceptions to every rule, all you redheads out there take note: Warm, lush tones enhance your natural beauty, whereas extreme pales as well as bold, vibrant colors can make you look as if you should be accessorizing with a toe tag.
