TV Fashion: Hank Moody from 'Californication'
Sometimes things are just too obvious. Like when a tailor's last name is Taylor or when a baker's last name is, um, Baker. So when we meet New York writer Hank Moody on Showtime's "Californication," airing Mondays, it's not much of a stretch to guess he might actually be moody. The fact that Hank, played by David Duchovny, wears a lot of black also isn't a huge stretch from his New York roots or literary gravitas. But it's that obvious stereotypical appearance that makes him attractive to women in Southern California who are used to sunny, blond-haired guys in pink oxfords.
That's not Hank. Though he tended to blend in on the mean streets of New York City, he sticks out like a sore thumb in Los Angeles, which lets us really appreciate the style of East Coast morosity. No matter the weather or time of day, Hank is dark: his mood, his outlook, his clothing. The lightest thing about him is his denim, and even that's dark. He prefers Earnest Sewn's Fulton jeans in medium weight and wash. And just like Hank, they're slightly distressed.
But a good pair of jeans doesn't say "washed-up writer" - regardless of what our editors say. So Hank tends to gravitate to the black side of the spectrum - often in black T-shirts from Los Angeles designer James Perse and available at Nordstrom. Over that he adds a beautiful Grandmas Couch long-sleeve woven shirt from Howe, also in black. The slim-fit shirt is made of stretch poplin and has a slight Western flair with its gathered yoke and flap pockets on the chest.
On those occasions that Hank has to be seen in public, costume designer Peggy A. Schnitzer pulls out all the stops for the cliched writer by putting him in a dark green corduroy blazer with leather elbow patches and dual back flaps. On his feet are minimalistic Torrance slip-on leather boot from Timberland in a tan-oiled suede. For a more casual look, Hank wears Converse All-Stars in, what else, black.
And though you might think this would wrap up Hank's look, the truth is we still have a ways to go to create Hank's attitude. And that comes from his accessories. Ray-Ban Highstreet RB 3301 sunglasses acknowledge that it may in fact be sunny, but don't let your eyes know it. A wide, spinner-banded stainless steel ring says Hank's trendy, dark and slightly fidgety - spinners are a great novelty for people who always need to be playing with something. And his piece de resistance? A Becerra Collection studded black leather cuff bracelet from Novica. It says, "I'm moody, I'm from New York and I'd like you to leave me alone unless you, too, are wearing one of these."
You know what? We like him more and more.
