Pajamas make the man

Hugh Hefner
Career Objective: To obtain a challenging and satisfying position much like that currently held by Hugh Hefner.

There's no point in denying it – 90 percent of American men want to be Hugh Hefner, and the other 10 percent really enjoy his articles. But when we tune in to "The Girls Next Door" on E!, we can't help but admire his taste in loungewear –- of course, that's after we admire the many uses of silicone in today's plebeian society. Still, aside from bloggers and househusbands, who gets to wear pajamas all day, every day? If we've said it once we've said it almost three times a day since we turned 13, "God bless you, Hugh Hefner."

But just what makes a good pair of men's pajamas? Assuming we follow Hef's lead and go with the classics, you want a traditional two-piece set made of cotton or silk broadcloth with notched collar tops and drawstring-waist bottoms. Often they feature contrasting piping around the lapels and cuffs. Brooks Brothers makes several beautiful styles that can give any man some Hefner flair.

If you want something a little more upscale from the Brothers, go with a cotton twill. It's pure luxury and gives your three girlfriends something to coo over. But for the ultimate in sleepwear luxury, you need to go Savile Row. The British may not know how to cook or drive on the right side of the road, but they know tailoring like a hooker knows a conventioneer. British label Derek Rose has a fantastic collection of men's "pyjamas" –- that's British – that, while not cheap, will make you feel like a prince. The brand's Woburn 8 Silk Pyjamas are 100-percent woven silk and are particularly striking.

Of course, Hef is known for more than his PJs. He has a collection of smoking jackets that would make Alistair Cooke sit up and take notice. Hitting their prime during Victorian times, the jackets were designed to keep the smell of smoke off one's regular clothing. Today, with society's disapproval of smoking, the smoking jacket has been relegated to novelty wear or the vintage racks. But that's not to say you can't find beautiful brand-new jackets that make the bunnies beam. Margita makes wonderful men's jackets in silk and velvet. Designed to literally last a lifetime, they feature silk crepe satin trim, silk charmeuse lining, pleated shawl collars, cuffed sleeves and deep pockets.

Other smoking jacket options can be found at http://www.hillesodesigns.com or by visiting www.shopthebunny.com (just in case you're looking for something with rabbit ears).
