'The Closer' may get a spinoff

Thecloser_cast_s2_240TNT has enjoyed unprecedented success with its series The Closer, so now it's looking to extend the franchise.

The network has given a script order to a possible spinoff of the show. Series creator James Duff and two of the show's scribes are working on the concept, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

What's not clear is what the new series would be about. TNT is keeping quiet on the details, so it's not known if the show, which is currently carrying the code name The Fixer, will star an existing character or a new one yet to be introduced.

Duff, Adam Belanoff and Michael Berchem -- both of whom have written multiple Closer episodes -- are working on the story. Duff and Belanoff will co-write the script and executive produce with Greer Shephard and Michael Robin.

The Closer has become the highest-rated series in the history of ad-supported cable and is still drawing big numbers in its fourth season. It's averaging about 7 million viewers a week so far this summer.

The show has also earned star Kyra Sedgwick three Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe win in 2007.

The closer is awesome, I would watch a spinoff. I just hope they don't go the CSI route and have three identical shows accept for the locales.

from the name alone, 'the fixer', i would go with something like this: when an investigation goes totally wrong (illegal search, bogus confession--watching all these crime dramas, you hear the phrase 'the fruit of the poisonous tree' where all the evidence off a bad act is unusable), a specialist is brought in to look at the case from an entirely different angle to get the criminal.
it could have a similar tension to the closer's 1st season with entrenched detectives not liking the outsider. to establish some cast continuity, there could be a team of specialists like criminal minds or bones.
that's just off the top of my head...

Just my thoughts here, but hasn't anyone else ever wondered what Fritz does when he's not offscreen? Seems too convenient not to have a spin off with Fritz as the main character working FBI cases in LA. Of course, what do I know? lol

Uhh ... "The Fixer" is their "code" for the show, it's not the actual show's title, which probably hasn't even been thought of yet. Jeez. Some people read way too much into these things.

By the way, would Sedgwick have gotten the role if she didn't have those fake hooters installed a few years ago? She used to have a couple of mosquito bites, I think it's a valid question. Frankly, I doubt she would have gotten the role, there are way too many episodes where there are shots of her cleavage. The ratings must skyrocket every time they point the camera at those twin towers.

sorry, "Closer" without Sedgwick would just be another humdrum silly cops procedural. I mean the performance. A lot of the character is the performance, I think. It's not like "Monk," which also has a tremendous performance which has kept it afloat--but also has some of the best writing and supporting performances anywhere on TV. "Monk" has jumped the shark a bit now, but it's still true. This is typical little tin soldier network thinking, always trying to catch the same damn piece of lightning in the same cracked bottle.

I really enjoyed the first season of The Closer, when it appeared on a few Canadian channels....but I haven't seen it since - and I don't have TNT....does anyone know if it'll be back on any Canadian channels soon?

It should be called The Farther
